New Tommy Video

Before the VH1 WHO special Saturday, VH1 previewed a new video called Tommy,
The Amazing Journey which was released that same day. After attending a
computer show in Philadelphia I stumbled across the video at a local record
store. $15 and a two hour drive back home later I plugged it in my VCR.
The video basically documents Tommy from its inception to its current
broadway version (which I did happen to see about a month ago and was both
impressed and disappointed, but that's another message thread...). The
video contained the same "stock" WHO live performances of Tommy that we
all have probably seen, plus some interesting interviews of Pete, Roger, and
John. The main focus of the video however was of the broadway version with
much of the dialouge and interviewing going between Pete and Des (last name
escapes me now but he was responsible for converting Tommy to La Jolla and
then broadway).

The video also contained some dialogue from Phil Collins, Tina Turner, Elton
John, and Ken Russell. John has a great line in the video of a reference to
Ken Russell. Some interesting facts from the video ( or at least I found
interesting) are:

Phil Collins metions that Keith was a major influence and when he passed
away, Phil expresed a extreme desire to drum for The Who.

David Bowie was in the running along with Tina for the acid queen role.

Pete tried everything he could to prevent Jack Nicholson from getting
the doctor role and beleives that Jack still holds it against him "he
was great in the movie about the nuthouse but he can't sing", PT.

The video is 58 minutes in length. If you are a WHO collector or just
interested on how it got to broadway, check it out.
