Atlantic Records has announced that they will start the process of
improving the sound quality of many of its classic-rock CD catalogue
including such artists as AC/DC, Bad Company, Crosby, Stills & Nash,
Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Yes, etc. [Does this include any Who/Who-related
releases? -AM] Many of these CD's (particularly those that were released
in the early-to-mid-'80s) were made from interior sounding tapes because
Atlantic was either too lazy to track down the original master tapes, or
the original masters were in the band's possession. Every effort will be
made to use the *original, first-generation master tapes* whenever
possible. In AC/DC's case, the master tapes are being requested from the
groups's Australian record company, and, in Genesis' case, the master
tapes are being requested from Virgin Records in the UK.

[Weird. People complained when CDs first started hitting the market
because they would have to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars
replacing their LPs; now it looks like the companies are saying, "Oops,
just joking; _here_ are the CDs we meant_ to put out." and people will
have to spend the money all over again replacing the sloppy first-out
CDs with the better ones. -AM]

These new CD's will be easily distinguishable because they will have new
catalogue numbers and will feature stickers on the jewel boxes noting
the upgrade.

The sound quality is not the only thing being upgraded; the graphics,
lyrics and information of each album's CD booklet will be upgraded as
well. Whenever possible, all of the album's original artwork will be
reproduced, right down to the inner dust sleeve *as well as* the LP
label that was used at the time. For example, the label side of the _Led
Zeppelin_ CD will feature the familiar orange and green Atlantic LP
label that was used in 1969.

The following is a tentative release schedule for the upgraded CD's:

21 June:	Led Zeppelin (1969 debut) and Led Zeppelin II
AC/DC's _High Voltage_ and _For Those About To Rock..._

19 July:	Led Zeppelin IV and _Houses Of The Holy_
Bad Company's _Straight Shooter_ and _Run With The Pack_
AC/DC's _Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap_

16 August:	Led Zeppelin III and _Presence_
CSN's _Deja Vu_ and _So Far_
AC/DC's _Highway To Hell_ and _Back In Black_

early Sept:	Yes' _The Yes Album_ and _Relayer_
two more each from Led Zep and BadCo (titles TBD)

In Led Zep's case, the same tapes used to create _The Complete Studio
Recordings_ 10 CD box set will be used for the individual upgraded CD's.

Also, on 7 June 1994, Atlantic will be releasing its own Gold Disc series,
similiar to Mobile Fidelity's Ultradisc CD's and DCC's Gold Discs.
Among those schedulded for release include:

	Pete Townshend's _Empty Glass_
	CSN's _Crosby, Stills & Nash_ (1969 debut)
	Phil Collins' _Face Value_
	Genesis _Abacab_
	Yes _Fragile_
	Foreigner _4_
