Could it be your EGR valve?  I had very similar problems with my 2.0 
litre.  Turned out to be the EGR valve.  If it is the valve I suggest 
you take a seat before they tell you the price! :)

For my 2.0 litre, the valve was CDN $902.00(roughly 600.00USD)!!!  
NOT including tax or labour!!

I ended up finding a used valve for $325(Still a huge rip off)

Wondering what's the problem and if they are related.  For the last 
year+ my 
96 GLX seems to have a hesitation when starting, taking off (from 
start and 
at lights) and sputters when the air conditioner is running.  Just 
not 
running as smooth as it used to.  Now every once in a while when I 
rev the 
car into 5000 range the check engine light comes on.  It stays on for 
about 
4-7 days and then goes off.  This probably happened 4-6 times over 
the past 
year.

What's the dilio?  I definitely need to change plugs and wires which 
could be 
contributing to rough start/run but what about the check engine 
light.  And 
why does it only come on when the rpms reach 5000 +/-.
