RE: CV Joints

I had to replace the CV joint on my driver-side because it flat-out broke on
me. :( No big deal tho'. You can visually inspect your CV boots for tears
and leaking black grease (not hard to notice if it did leak). If your boot
is torn and has leaked, then your CV's will go bad. A bad CV joint is
generally diagnosed by a "clicking" noise as you make a turn. They usually
do not make noise if you are going straight.

It actually sounds like you might have a couple bad strut bearings. These
do go bad, and when they do... they make some clunking noises. This might
explain why you hear them when you turn and drive over uneven ground. If
the bearing is destroyed, then the strut cannot pivot/rotate smoothly at the
top when you turn your wheel. Plus, there is now some space underneath the
strut mount that allows the strut piston to move more freely.

If you can find someone with an impact gun, they should be able to pop off
our front struts pretty easily to inspect for bad strut bearings. The
bearing itself can be purchased for ~$10 each at the dealership ($10.11 at
mine).

Good Luck,

-Chuck

Chris...

Have you had to replace your CV joints? I just turned 60 K and I have
noticed a "thunk" seemingly coming from the front axle lately....both
sides...usually associated with turning, accelerating, and uneven ground.

Thanx...

Greg
