There are two types of NGK's that are considered OEM.

BKR5EKU ~$5 each
BKR5EKUP (Platinum long-lifes) ~$12 each

The platinums might last longer, but they will not give you any difference
in performance.  I'm not sure which version come stock from the factory.
Just get the non-platinum versions and buy yourself a beer with all that
money you just saved.  :)

They were saying that the stock plugs are platinum.  Is that not true?

And is there anyone in the SF Bay Area whose done this and would be
interested in talking me through it?
