Rob, if you haven't gotten an answer yet...
I didn't need any special tools; there's a screw hole on the top of your drive belt tensioner that
needs to be used, so you'll need that screw. I don't remember what size it is (it's in the Bentley).
You'll need to remove your airbox assembly and MAF, and there's a splash guard under your car that
needs to come off as well so you can get to all the points of the belt's path.
Other than that, it's just a matter of pulling the old belt out and fishing the new one in. Kind of
a pain in the arse (for me anyway) and will most likely take about 45 minutes your first time. And
yes, the average person can do it. :-)

John, who started this thread, also asked about
changing his serpentine belt. Somebody mentioned that
the 4 cylinder should be a lot easier, but that the
belt for the VR6 was a hassle to change.
My question is how long will it take me to change the
belt. Do I need any special tools? Would I be better
off just paying someone to do it or is it something
that the average person can do?
