Re: Engine light and belt

Yeah, there are two versions for sure. The Service Manual, which I have, has blink codes for ODB-I
systems (4-digit codes) but nothing for ODB-II systems, which we both have. Then there's the
Official Factory Repair Manual, http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=EVA3 for $99 from
Bentley publishing. It's brand-new (site still says pre-order for Summer 2001) so don't get too
pissed, but it seems like (unfortunately, for that price) a must-have. It's supposed to have all the
codes.

I could have swore that my Bentley manual carried a list of codes, and their
description.
I'll have to check to verify. I know that Potterman carries the Bentley
CD's, but they are the same as the manuals. I did not know there were two
versions of the Bentley manual for VW's. If there really is a different
"Factory Repair Manual", then I'm gonna be pissed.

The only Bentley that includes ODB-II codes is the Factory Repair Manual
(not the Service Manual)
which is available only on CD for like $90. AFAIK Potterman doesn't have
that yet.

Do you know of any web sites that list the codes?

The Bentley is available for $45 from Potterman: www.parts4vws.com

Or... when you pull the codes, I'm sure any of us on this list would
be more than happy to let you know what those codes correspond to
in the Bentley manual.

Good Luck,

Yeah, but where can you get the code list other than the $90 official shop
manual from Bentley?

VAG-COM is a nice package that speaks the VW diagnostic protocol and
will let you see what the computer is complaining about, and optionally
reset it the fault codes. You can also get a lot of other real-time
diagnostic info from it, and change settings on the various controllers
in the car. It's a lot better than an OBD-II tester because it does
the VW-specific stuff as well. For $200 including the cable, it's
a steal. The site is http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/index.html

As for the check engine light, there's some sort of intermittant event
that turns it on, and it will stay on for a fixed period of time -
I think it's three enginge run cycles. If the event doesn't occur again
during that time, the computer figures the problem was really a fluke,
and turns the light back off. Mine did it when my plugs and cables
needed to be replaced, and the engine would occasionally missfire.
