RE: It's time to replace the Fog lights

You don't have any room to actually use the ratcheting action. I used it
because it provided a 90 degree angle for the socket that was attached. It
basically kept the nut from spinning while use loosened it from the front.

You can probably use a small wrench to do the job.

Ratchet? Does the 97 and/or GTI have a different setup than the 96 GLX? Mine
definitely did not have
anything you could grip without some sort of pliers...

I used a small ratchet to gain access to the nut behind the bumper.
It made it very easy to change bulbs in the foglights. You can get
the small ratchet behind if you insert it from the turn signals area.
The key is to pop out the turn signals and the dummy lenses.

You will want to kill yourself when you realize how easy it is to do.

Thanks guys for the info. So it seems that some of you reached under the
car and some used tools to hold the nut. I think I'm going to have to wait
for this weekend before I try again. By the time I get out of work it's to
dark for me work on the car. Why do you think VW made replacing the fog
lights so hard? do they think we would bring it into the dealer for them to
do? talking about the sealership! I brought my car in to sealer to get a
coolant leak fix, I also told them to do a 70k service. when I got the
service invoice, it said that as part of the 70k service they checked all
lights etc..etc... NoT! Now it has me wondering if they really fixed the
leak. I still smell the sweet smell of coolant after driving my car. I
have not found any spots on the ground yet by I'm looking!
thanks again guys.
