I had the same concern with my 97 GLX. It ended up been the return spring on 
the clutch pedal. There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) from VW. It has 
you install a different bracket to prevent the overcentering of the return 
spring causing it to pop out. Just have to take out the black lower panel 
under the dash to look at the clutch pedal spring. It's worth a look. GOOD
