Re: Changing Alternator

Good move with the airbox, don't need to remove any
hoses. Unscrew front and passenger side engine mounts
slide jack uder front of the engine and as you jack it
up a little you will see alternator bolts show up
where airbox usedto be. It is still pretty difficult
to get to the back of the alternator, but its
possible. Make CERTAIN that you disconnected battery
cables and removed all wires going to the alternator.
There is a small wire on the back of the alternator
that can be broken off very easly. When you get the
bolts out it still won't go easy, you propably need to
put some sort of lever between the engine and
alternator and help it out a little, be careful - you
can ruin your alternator...
Intalation is fairly simple, do everything above in
reversed order, however just before connecting new
alternator and screwing in the bolts, put the
alternator in it's spot and notice how easy it moves
in it's bracket. That's because alternator's aluminium
housing has two steel nut-like thingies pressed into
it where bolts screw in. You need to adjust those
things so when you put the alternator back into the
bracket it will fit a much tihgter than before but not
as thight as the old one. Be careful and don't break
off those things from the alternator housing and don't
count on moving those thingies as you screw in the
bolts because I can almost guarante that you would
break the bolt and not move these suckers.
Those are things that I have learned by practice, yes
I wanted to go the easy way and just screw in those
bolts and tighten them really hard so the alternator
would sit thight in the bracket and sure enough I
broke the bolt, it broke inside this little sucker and
it was major pain to get it out.
It looks like a hell of a project but don't worry if
you pay attention to what you're doing, you'll be done
in about an hour.
I hope it helps and saves a hassle of taking out
intake mainfold and some other stuff.
Please let me know how it worked for you.
