Just over 25k and acting funny

Hey group,
    At just over 25k my 98 GLX stalled at startup then I started her up
again with white smoke from the exhaust, lots of it. I reved the engine then
everything is ok. Drove all about 30 miles and no problem at all. Any
suggestions on what it could be and if VW is good with cars that are just
our of warranty? Had it in the shop three weeks ago for it's 20k check up
with 22k on it. I've had no problems with this car before, well except for a
pissing off a few Mustangs. :)
