Strut Bearings

Howdy all,
Does anyone know how to check upper strut bearings?
Gonna replace the suspension parts soon with OEM parts
and I wanted to know whether or not to put a new set of 
bearings in. Car is at 80kmi on a stock suspension...

I pushed on the bumper to depress the front end about 2"
and the strut bearings moved less than 1 mm. The is a 1/4"
gap between the upper plate and the bearing rest, is this
typical?

Anyone got any ideas?
