He was probably trying to sell you Dunlop D60 A2's.  These are good all season 
performance tires.  I think they are a very good tire.  I think that they are 
the tire that VW should have used as OEM tires on the GLX.  The Pirelli's will 
give you better performance only if you drive the car hard enough to exploit 
their higher cornering limits.  The other thing to consider is that I think 
the D60 A2's are going out of production.  Some people don't like to buy a 
tire that's going out of production because you can't get the same kind if one 
is damaged later on.
