Fan controls

Hi guys,
	I've gotten myself in kindof a bind and don't know how to get out of 
this one.  I have a 95 Jetta GLX, and originally just the #1 setting on the 
AC/Heater controls didn't work.  So I took it apart trying to figure out why, 
and the copper contact ring that makes it work, well, one of the tabs on the 
top broke off.  Long story short, I can only get the controls to work by 
using a penny in between these contacts (bad practice).  I don't know how the 
hell to fix this, and am hoping that I don't have to buy a new set of 
controls to get it to work.  
	I am hoping someone has been down this same road and can give me some 
guidance as to what I should do to fix this.  I also tried to join the copper 
contacts together with solder, and that was a no-go.  Please help if you 
can!!!
