To be exact, I believe the Mercedes M class vehicles make use of all wheel
drive, not quite the same as four wheel drive.
While in four wheel drive, all wheels get the exact same amount of power, on
the other hand, all wheel drive uses viscous
couplers on each axle to transfer necessary power to a slipping wheel when
viscosity increases. Or something like that...
