Jetta GLX Front Wheel Bearing Problem

This is my first post to the GLX list.

The front right wheel bearing on my wife's '94 GLX has just failed at 36k
miles, and I have been told by two people in the industry that the early
GLXs were prone to this problem and that VWUSA has corrected them out of
normal warranty.

I'm not looking for any free lunches, but if there truly were faulty
bearings fitted I would like to take it up with VW.
