The best price I have found anywhere for the filters is at Timmons VW
http://dealer.vw.com/visit/timmons/

for $10 each. The filter housing is easy to get to. The oil pan drain plug
is further under the car and it a bit more difficult, but no problem to get
a socket on there. You may want to measure the 'nut' on the bottom of the
filter housing to make sure you've got the right size wrench...
