if you take it to a shop, it is an hour work.  it is a direct fit to the cat from the engine.  It goes perfect with any aftermarket exhaust.  They work by routing the pressure from the engine in such a way, is causes an increase in hp (almost the same concept as an exhaust).  the stock ones basically have two pipes tunneling all the way to the cat.  it will give a constant flow rate.  an aftermarket ones, they go from (ie)6 pipes to four really quick.  from the four to the two pipes about mid way down the header.  then from the two pipes to the one.  the way the pipes routes, it increases the pressure (flow) to make your gain hp.. if it goes from the 6 to the 1..then it is only good for top end speed (around 55-7k rpm). when you have a system the gradually goes from the 6 to the 1..then it gains bottom end speed also.  
the only trick to this.. is that to get the optimum performance.. you need to have a certain amount of pressure being produced (cams, intake, exhaust) already.  stock cars only gain 3-5 hp with headers.
bolt on modded cars gain 13-15 hp.
