blink fault codes

Does anyone know if it is possible to read the "check engine" fault
codes using MIL light blink method on a '96 model?  I know this is
possible on diesels and older models but am having trouble finding
anyone who can tell me if it is possible on later models.  I would
appreciate it if someone could outline the method or steer me to a site
where this may be outlined.  Additionally, could other faults such as
ABS or Airbag be read in the same way?  Is it at least possible to do
some sort of global erase of all stored fault codes that cause all those
abominable MIL lights to illuminate!!
