If you don't change the filter, then you have at least half a quart of 
grit still in there. The filters get filthy, and, being filters, that's 
where all the dirt accumulates and sits. So changing the oil w/o changing 
the filter (even IF you take the filter off, empty it out, and put it 
back on - it STILL has the grit) is almost like not changing the oil at 
all. You still have all of that crap in there - PLUS the filter stops 
working so well because it's already clogged with that crap, dirt, grit, 
etc. Not a good idea, in my opinion, to skip. Just my two cents' worth, 
however. Take 'em or leave 'em.
