Re: Open Element Filters (Re: Chips)long

Okay Billy T,

Your theory on the open air element sounds logical as well as Daves
theory about the cooler air vs hotter air on airplanes. So this makes
it even more confusing for a person like me that wants to make the
upgrade, then on the flipside, it seems that it won't be beneficial
whether you have an open element air filter or not.

I did try an experiment this last weekend on a stormy afternoon with
winds gusting 35-50mph and driving rain, I drove 60 miles on the
highway to another city, so when I got there I opened the hood to
see if water came in, and it did. The airbox did have water on it in
the front closest to the headlights, and other parts on the engine
towards the front had wateron it also. It wasn't as if someone
washed it the engine bay down with a bucket of water, although
it did make me think twice.

Is there a Cold Air induction system available for the GLX? I have
seen them for other cars, and have read that it does alot of good.
My girlfriend has a Miata and recieves aftermarket upgrade catalogs
that have them in there for her car.

It seems that alot of companies have open air elements available,
but if they didn't make sense would they still try to sell them? Do
they really spend money on research and development on products
like that before they market them? Or do they just get on the band-
wagon and make something and retail it?

Later------Thanks for any comments/suggestions
