Engine light on

Hi,

This morning on the way to the airport my "check engine light" came on.  I 
carried on my way, figuring that it meant that I was due to give the 
dealer some cash.  Before I arrived at the airport, however, it had 
extinguished itself!  What does the light indicate when it comes on?  
Should I avoid driving until having it checked (this would be very 
inconvenient - it's parked in the airport lot now)?
