Check Engine Light

Hey everyone!

My check engine light came on last night...  1996 model, no mods.
No change in performance or anything, just that orange engine light.
BTW, it happened once before.  Nothing, they said, an electric glitch. 
Then they charged me for the diagnostics...  How annoying.  What
about 100,000 mile warranty, I asked cynically.  Yeah right, they said. 
Oh well.

I called a dealer a minute ago.  They want me to come in to have it
checked again (surprise).  So, I asked a guy if I have to do it in a
dealership, or other services can read the "code" and have it "deleted" if
it's nothing again.  He said that is impossible, ONLY the dealerships have
the proper diagnostic equipment to read those codes.

Is that true?
