Re: strut removal
If your strut has the hex key fitting in the end of the shaft you can
fabricate a tool like I did. Buy a spare 22mm 1/2" drive socket (from
an auto parts store or Wal-Mart not an expensive one like a Crafstman)
and using a bench grinder, make grooves in each side of the socket so
a large adjustable wrench will fit around it. Then, put the socket on
the strut nut and use the wrench to grip it. You can then use a hex
key put through the hole in the socket where the ratchet would attach
to hold the shaft in place while you use the wrench to remove the nut.

Is there a special tool to take off the front struts on a VR6? I had to get
vise grips and grip the shock shaft on the bottom and take a 22mm socket on
top to do it, and figured there was a better way to do it...is there any way
short of buying VW's special strut tool?
