Cleaning engine

Does anyone know of a good way to get the runners on the front of the
almighty VR6 clean -- (you know, the silver ones in front of the plastic
VR6 cover)?  I've tried Simple Green and various other cleaners, but any
advise would be appreciated.  SG has taken everything off until these
spots.  I have no idea what they are from either -- maybe the ONE time
the car was in the salt?
