Snow Tires for GLX

I'm told by the Tire Rack that the GLX has very tight tire diameter specs.
beyond which the computer gets screwed up (emissions not just odometer).
Dealer and VW USA are completely unhelpful!!

Can anyone help me as to what my options are.  If the Tire Rack is to be
believed, I can only do 195/55 or 205/50.  I would rather go to 185 if
possible, probably a 65.  This would increase my diameter by 1.5 inches. Is
this a problem?
