Ted-

I think your attitude sucks. What's important is that you get some
enjoyment out of the money you spend. If he's got cash to burn, what do you
care? Is this suddenly the USSR? If we're into socialism, that's one thing.
If there are 'idiot mechanics' out there that make a living by providing
services to those of us who would prefer to keep our expertise outside of
the auto mechanic profession, who are you to say "you shouldn't be allowed
to have... a fast car".

Saying "mods.. aren't for you" is a load of crap. I don't see Michael
Schumacher jumping out of his formula one car to get under the hood.

I haven't done one iota of work on my Jetta (oh wait, I did apply some
Rain-X last weekend myself), but I certainly appreciate driving it.

I'm not an auto mechanic, but I appreciate improving my car.

I'm not a world class chef, but I appreciate fine dining.

On the other hand, I do know TCP/IP inside and out, and know more about the
Internet than most people should know. You don't see me posting to this
list complaining about the fact that you didn't telnet directly to port 25
on igtc.com, do you?

I also know how to burn my own IC's, and have designed a few special
purpose ASICs. Does that mean that me and Garret Lim should be the only
ones who get to put chips in our cars?

Is the farmer down the road the only one who should get to enjoy bacon and
eggs?

The argument that "If you haven't doen the work on it yourself, then it
ain't yours" is ludicrous.

My point is, to each his own. If you find it's cool to talk macho about
doing your own installs, that's great. Just remember there's always going
to be someone cooler than you who can machine his own parts as well as
install them. And then there's the guy cooler than him who can make his
machining equipment to machine the parts and THEN install them. Then
there's the guy who mines the ore to make his own machining equipment, to
make his own parts to do his own installs......

And the fact is, there are probably some REALLY good drivers out there that
can leave you in the dust, and they don't know the dipstick from the
carburetor. Surely, you are not infallible-- the embodiment of perfection
in all things. Maybe this guy is a much better driver, and can wipe you up
on the racetrack; it's just that he isn't cut up to be a mechanic. Should
he stop racing cars?

Drop the attitude, it'll suit you better. You don't have anything to prove
to us on this list, so stop acting like we have something to prove to you.
