Blinking Side Markers

Looking for help on a wiring situation.  As everyone knows, our side markers
(on A3's at least) don't blink with our turn signals.  But, I'm on a mission
to get the side blinkers to work.  Does anyone have enough experience with
bulbs/sockets, etc., to kind of put a schematic together?  Here are some
questions:

1. The bulb that is used for our side markers are small (don't know the number
off hand).  Do they make a dual filament bulb in the same size?

2. The socket is obviously made for two positions (on or off).  Is it possible
to create a new socket with three (off, on & bright on -- for the flashing
turn signal)?

3. Should I avoid the dual filament bulb and focus on just having the bulb
blink on and off?

4. Am I wasting my time?
