The heated mirrors have nothing to do with your "sports" package.
When did VW begin offering a "sports" package?  Heated seats
and washer nozzles came with the "cold weather" package.  Heated
mirrors are standard on all GLX/GTi vehicles.

Since mid-96 the mirrors have been hard wired into the ignition
so that they stay heated at all times the car is operating.
