You can replace the head unit without having to do anything else. If your
installer tells you otherwise, tell him his is full of shit.  I have a
Clarion 7375 installed right now, and it's the only change I made to the
sound system - the speakers and amp are stock.

All you do is when you install the unit hook up the + leads and leave the 
- leads alone (don't ground them, don't hook them to anything).  If your
installer says you can't, go somewhere else - he just wants to lie to
you and sell you a lot of gear.
