$23,000 is list for white/blk leather, all weather pkg, 5sp, emissions, side
bags, and destination. If that's your set-up, you're OK there.

Leasing? I can tell you a lot about (VW Credit) leasing. Actually, I
think I posted a few months ago about how leases are figured. In short, DO
NOT negotiate around a lease payment. This is how people screw themselves
when leasing. Start by getting a discount off of list price as if you were
buying the car with cash. This is very important because it is the only
thing you can really negotiate in the whole deal. You should be able to get
at least $1000 off. From here, everything else is a matter of picking
options that affect the depreciation and service charge (interest,
basically) from tables determined by VW credit.
When I was getting ready to lease my '97, I did up and Excel spreadsheet
to see how the different leasing options would affect the payment. E-mail
me with as much specific information as you can and I'll plug in some
numbers. I don't have the current VW Credit leasing schedule, but I'll get
a copy. Using the '97 numbers, your deal looks good.
The aquisition fee is a flat charge due at the inception of all the VW
Credit leases. For the last few years it has been $450, but maybe it has
changed recently.
The dealer doesn't charge you for excess mileage and wear, VW credit
does. The charges (and the $250 termination fee) only apply if the car is
returned to VW Credit. If you or your dealer buy it, it is sold at the
residual value that is determined at the start of the lease.
