I used a paint pen to paint the VR6 badge on the back of my car red. I
have a 95, so the GTI is silver (I wanted to be different :-) It's held
up well. I painted it in July and it still looks just as good as when I
did it. No primer is needed either. I picked mine up from a local hobby
shop, but I have also seen them at hardware stores. I wouldn't use them
on the calipers because I don't think the paint is heat-resistant, but I
painted the VW symbol on my engine black in December w/ a pen and the
VR6-DOHC red in July and they both still look good. Cost- about $2. One
pen is more than enough for the engine and badges.
