I finally figured it out. You know how at the county fair they have those 
little games you can play? Like you throw the rings and try and get it onto 
a bottle, or you try and throw a baseball and knock over a stack of bottles? 
Well Walter must have done one of those little contests at some point and 
won. Only instead of the prize being a teddy bear or something, the prize 
that day was an NBA contract.
