Suspended Rockets player Griffin accused of assault

Suspended Houston Rockets forward Eddie Griffin is being investigated by
police, who were told the player beat and shot at a woman at his home. No
warrant had been issued and police hadn't found Griffin as of yesterday
afternoon. Police received a call from a woman before dawn yesterday saying
Griffin assaulted her. Griffin later called police to say somebody had broken
into his house. The team suspended Griffin indefinitely Oct. 16 after he
missed practices and a flight . . . Golden State forward Troy Murphy will miss
the start of the season with a right foot injury . . . Point guard Keith
McLeod signed as a replacement for injured Troy Hudson, rejoining the
Timberwolves four days after being cut . . . The Oakland Athletics have
refused to allow vice president and general manager Billy Beane to speak to
the Seattle Mariners about an open front office position . . . Left wing
Pascal Dupuis signed a three-year contract with the Minnesota Wild, according
to his agent. Dupuis had 20 goals and 28 assists for the Wild last season . .
. In tennis, top-seeded Andy Roddick was knocked off by David Nalbandian, 7-5,
7-5, in the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel. Nalbandian will play
Guillermo Coria in an all-Argentine final . . . Kim Clijsters overwhelmed
Maria Sharapova, 6-0, 6-3, in the SEAT Open semifinals in Luxembourg.
Clijsters will play Chanda Rubin, who defeated Marlene Weingartner, 6-2, 7-5.

NFL is retesting players' samples for new steroid THG
The NFL is rechecking players' drug tests to look for the newly identified
steroid THG. The steroid, at the center of an investigation by the US
Anti-Doping Agency, previously was undetectable. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello
said "as soon as the report came out about THG, we said we would be testing
for it, and we are." . . . John Daly is skipping the year's final two PGA Tour
events to take care of personal issues, a top tour official said. Chief of
operations Henry Hughes and Bud Martin, Daly's agent at SFX Sports, both
denied a report that Daly was barred from the tour until he seeks treatment
for drinking. Martin also denied reports that Daly has entered rehab . . .
Martina Ertl of Germany opened the World Cup ski season by winning a giant
slalom in Soelden, Austria. She had a two-run time of 2 minutes 31.86 seconds
in her first victory in three years . . . Sweden's Peter Larsson and Italy's
Gabriela Paruzzi won the opening races of the World Cup cross-country season
in Duesseldorf, Germany. Larsson was first in the 1-kilometer sprint for the
second straight year . . . Veikko Hakulinen, a Finnish cross-country skier who
won three Olympic gold medals in the 1950s, died after being hit by a car,
police said in Helsinki. He was 78.
