"The Celtics will save about $320,000 this year, and
next summer, the team payroll drops from the $57
million range to the $51 million range, allowing it to
use the mid-level exception (around $5 million) to
sign a free agent."

That is the spin being put on it now. I will bet
anybody on this list lunch that next summer, they will
drag out the tired line that because of LaFrentz,
Baker and Pierce's salaries, they can't exercise the
mid-level exception. They could have used the smaller
exception this offseason and they didn't. This is a
cheap team. Exactly the kind of short-term thinking
that had Gaston and Wallace crowing about a $1 million
savings after they traded Kenny's expiring salary for
Baker's albatross.
