By Globe Staff and Wires, 7/15/2003

eteran forward Juwan Howard intends to sign with the Orlando Magic, joining a
team in need of a versatile starter to play alongside guard Tracy McGrady.
Howard probably will be signed to a five-year contract worth between $28 and
$38 million, a source within the NBA speaking on condition of anonymity told
The Associated Press. He can sign as early as tomorrow, when the league's free
agency period begins. The 6-foot-9-inch former Michigan star has averaged 17.9
points over his nine-year career, which includes six full seasons in
Washington and stints in Dallas and Denver . . . Seventeen-year veteran Steve
Kerr, whose contributions off the bench helped San Antonio win the NBA
championship, said he will probably play one more season with the Spurs before
retiring . . . The Phoenix Suns signed their top draft pick, 6-11 forward
Zarko Cabarkapa of Serbia, to a three-year contract . . . Oregon high school
star Travis Outlaw, a 6-9 forward picked 23d in the first round by Portland,
signed with the Trail Blazers . . . Lisa Leslie is expected to miss at least
two games for the Los Angeles Sparks after bruising her right knee Saturday
night in the WNBA All-Star Game . . . Free agent defenseman Greg de Vries, who
spent the last five years with the Colorado Avalanche, signed a four-year deal
with the New York Rangers reportedly worth $13 million . . . The Nashville
Predators acquired forward Mike Farrell from the Washington Capitals for
defenseman Alexander Riazantsev . . . The Buffalo Sabres signed unrestricted
free agent defenseman Joel Bouchard to a one-year contract . . . Russian
defenseman Kiril Koltsov, Vancouver's second-round draft pick in 2002, signed
with the Canucks . . . Defenseman Radek Martinek re-signed with the New York
Islanders . . . The Phoenix Coyotes signed 19-year-old Czech center Jakub
Koreis, the 19th selection in the 2002 draft, to a multiyear contract . . .
The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Allan Rourke, acquired in a deal
with Toronto May 29, to a one-year deal . . . A judge in Dallas ruled in favor
of Deion Sanders in a lawsuit over repairs made to his 1961 convertible,
saying the former Cowboy paid the full amount he had authorized for the work .
. . The Carolina Panthers re-signed cornerback Emmanuel McDaniel . . . The
Jets signed safety Derek Pagel, a fifth-round pick out of Iowa . . .
Manchester United acquired US national team goalie Tim Howard from the New
York-New Jersey MetroStars for what may be the largest transfer fee for a
Major League Soccer player. The MetroStars didn't release financial details
but the team's had been discussing a $3 million transfer fee for Howard, which
would eclipse the $2.5 million England's Nottingham Forest paid for Columbus
Crew forward Stern John in 1999
