Eastern Conference TPR Allstars
By: Joe Schaller
Date: February 1, 2003
***Although improved from last season the Eastern Conference is still a far
cry from the powerful West. The primary reason is the power positions which
have only one true standout, Ben Wallace.
***If Vince Carter had any sense of honor he would bow out for someone
deserving like Donyell Marshall, Shareef Abdur-Rahim or P J Brown.
***If the current season is the media's primary allstar criteria than Ron
Artest, Donyell Marshall and even Kerry Kittles should be on the East team
while Allen Iverson and Antoine Walker should absolutely be left off.
Iverson's game has regressed back to his level of 3 years ago yet the notion
of his allstar status continues.
***What does Eddie Jones need to do for a little respect? He practically
single handedly carries the Heat, a club with the league's slowest Game Pace
depleting everyone's stats, and is consistent year in and year out with one
of the most complete games exhibited by any guards outside of McGrady, Bryant
and Kidd. I give him the nod over Jason Terry and Iverson based on this
season's performance.
***Sam Cassell has my record for most near misses without making my team.
SchallerTPR: A rational process for allstar selection.
Here's my criteria:
1. Half a season does not an allstar make: You have to pay your dues, people!
How many times do we see a first half flash fizzle down the stretch? Or a
slow starter like Karl Malone have a sterling second half run?
The current season counts half and the previous season half. This takes into
account consistency and durability.
By this reasoning rookies are not allowed!
2. Minutes played are factored: Players who did not have the durability or
coaches confidence are essentially penalized despite their outstanding TPR.
3. Flexibility: The East is loaded with guards and weak at forward- solution;
6 guards, 4 forwards.
The West is loaded with forwards- solution; 6 forwards, 4 guards.
4. No room for sentimentality: Even Michael Jordan has to earn his way.
Allstar selections should be all about truth and justice and when an
undeserving player is selected it means a deserving player is slighted.
