McCARTY

< In the end, the Celtics gave him the most solid offer -
a guaranteed $762,435 - and with a September wedding closing
in, McCarty chose the stability of his situation here. >

Well, Walter, when you are sixth runner-up in a beauty contest you
have no choice but to choose the stability of walking behind the
float in the grand parade.

Most solid offer? I can only assume you were ecstatic to even
receive one veteran minimum contract offer after six unproductive
years in the league. Betcha a first-edition copy of Leo Papilebs
COMPILATION OF MY BEST DRAFT CHOICES that in this season of
unsigned free agents, not one other team even offered you a contract.

Far as I can see, you have a following of two-

<I would have been devastated if Walt had not ended up in
    a Boston uniform.> - Obie

< And for the record, I'm strongly of the opinion that McCarty
at the league minimum was a wise signing and an excellent move.
To bring back somebody that already knows the system, the team
personnel, and coaching staff; is somewhat of a crowd fav; not
to mention the fact that he helps maintain consistency and an
established team chemistry. Plus, defensively he showed well
in spurts in the playoffs last year. > -CeltsSteve

Sure, Walter, you have a pleasing face and singing voice, and are a
great high energy, rah-rah locker room/bench guy. And you even
might in some small way (in the absence of Rogers, Strick, and
Anderson) help to maintain consistency and team chemistry . Once
in a while you even sink a three. But how many other more talented
(and more directly linked to our specific needs) FA minimum players
did the Celtics pass over for the rights to retain you for yet another
year?

You sure are versatile, Walter... jack of all trades but master of none.
Heck, tonight with Battie and maybe Baker out with minor injuries,
you just might have to man the center position behind AW since our
3rd string center, Sundov, can only be utilized as an Obie PF - i.e.
a 3-point specialist.
