Simplicity itself--call the contact number on your DirecTV bill, and tell 
them you do NOT wish to renew.  I got a letter from my cable company, and 
they listed no less then three different ways to cancel with them.

Yes, they do it that way deliberately for the reason you cite--hoping 
customers will either a. forget they have it, or b. decide it's more 
trouble than it's worth to cancel.  Phone companies do the same thing when 
offering deals on calling features ("FREE CALLER ID for a MONTH"--but if 
you forget to call before the end of that month...)
