SI preview
BTW, the URL for that SI preview of the Celtics (which
among other things calls Antoine "a joke of an All Star")
is at:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/2003/previ
ew/news/2002/10/01/celtics_preview/
I was initially tempted to e-mail these douche-bags to
say Antoine was voted in by the fans, deserves to be an
All Star etc.
Incidentally, the SI preview guy (John Hollinger) also
says: "you can recite The Iliad in the time it takes him
(Vin Baker) to get upcourt." Funny.
Well I think he's just trying to make a name for himself
by being sarcastic and opinionated. I've never heard of
the guy before, so there you go...
But the way the Paul Pierce "ballhog" story has bounced
around from one lazy national columnist to the next, it
is a matter of some concern (enough to waste my lunch
break at least). Until proven otherwise, my view is that
the Pierce thing is a non-issue or a completely resolved
issue among the USA players, or else Pierce would have
addressed it by now.
But the "ball hog excuse for why the USA lost" probably
will bounce around a bit more in the press (probably in
each case with no new substantiation).
Does it remind you of the "most hated player in the NBA"
quote about Antoine, which Peter May started and months
later admitted came from the trainer of the Miami Heat
(not even a player)? By the time it had made the rounds,
columnists were citing it as though it were the results
of a Gallup survey.
The agents of the other USA players who played so poorly
this summer (except Brand and Pierce) must be absolutely
loving it. As counter-factual as it seems, its a
convenient excuse for why there clients didn't show up,
or why the worst shooter (Andre Miller) was the biggest
ball hog when the games frittered away. That's my opinion
anyway, unless these columnists can come up with further
proof to substantiate there need to embellesh. I know I'm
beating a dead horse by now, but I'm siding with Pierce.
