Re: The Boston Celtics Mailing List Digest V9 #136

Hello, all. I'm new to the Celtics Digest, but I've been a subscriber for
a few months now. I write a column about the Celtics for a website and I
thought someone would be able to help me.

I'm looking for a snapshot of Pierce dropping the three-ball while Matt
Harpring is sprawled on floor face-first. Does anyone have that photo?

Thanks

What is the good word on when we get Vitaly back? Not only do I want his
big body, but the man has earned the right to play on a playoff series.

I was psyched to see Kedrick get a few minutes and hit his shots!

I think we are getting too much ahead of ourselves talking like this.
Part of the reason we were successfull on defense was that the Sixers
don't have a good perimeter game or shooters. We were able to
*collapse the pocket* and dare them shoot from outside. The Cs gave
wide open shots to Mckie, Snow and others not named Iverson.

I think the Pistons series will be a different challenge. Barry,
Willamson, Atkins, uncle Cliffy, Damon Jones, Stack can shoot from
outside - spreading the floor - we may not be able to *collapse the
pocket* that frequently.

However, I feel good about our chances, about our team's HEART and
HUNGER. Celtics in 5.

I watched the Philly series games 2 and 5. Even tho we won the series,
I strongly feel we should NOT resign Rogers. IMO, he is going downhill
(he's 30 now). I see him as a slow footed, perimeter oriented,
undersized (6-7) power forward, who will likely play more and more
AWAY from the basket - which is not what is needed *traditionally* in
a PF.

If Wallace resigns him, I think he would become like the Rhandy Brown
signing, roster and cap burden.

In my mind, Rogers (and Delk), is good only for this playoff run.

I noticed Battie has been rebounding ferociously, WANTING it during
the Philly series. It was very nice to see Battie giving Motombo a
hard time. I hope batman continues to have the same intensity battling
Ben Wallace.

I agree with Kevin. It is wise to take this one game at a time. The
Pistons pose a different set of challenges for our guys. Ben Wallace has
been a rebounding machine against us. Hopefully, we'll be able to bring
Wallace outside in the same way we tried to get Mutombo out of the paint.

We can beat them but they have some weapons too.

Yep, meant Indiana. French Lick to be precise. The press labeled it that
way(Hicksville). My meaning was for Larry to vacate it long enough to show
up for some games.

The Celts were subdued from the start and Detroit shot lights-out all game.
I'm really wondering if they were more focused on Game 2. I hope so, cause
they'll need it now; I feel they need one of the first two to take the
series.

I'm betting I'll be more energized on Wednesday. I hope the C's are too.

Pistols beat us at our own game. 3's. Bad play continued from late in the
2nd
for the rest of the game. KA the main fault contributor. He doesn't
believe
PP then AW are 1st choice. If I need to lose a game I want those 2 to do

KA took the ball deep time and time again disrupting flow.

With that said, I think we will win game 2. Why? There not better than us.
We
win 1 in Detroit, 3 at home. 7 game series now.

I don't think so, although my scanerio had the Celts stealing this one,
losing #2, the winning all the Boston games. I'm not too discouraged
because
the Cs haven't won in Detroit all year; they haven't won on the road in the

playoffs (THAT better change soon!) and, most of all, because they were
down
20 and came back to within 9. That pluck means something when you're
looking
for good signs.
I noted several possessions when the Pistons, like the Sixers before
them, managed to score with less than 2 seconds on the 24. That hurts.

My take on today's loss: we completely mailed it in.
No urgency, no energy, and a typically undercoached
offensive performance. KA especially horrible today,
but how about the reappearance of "Evil Paul" after
passing out of so many double teams on Friday.

The upside is that these Pistons don't scare me one
bit. Philadelphia a tougher team in every way. The
Celtics basically gave this one away.

Subject: Today's game

1. Detroit looked like a bunch of Michael Coopers out there today. No
driving lanes, kicking out the ball instead of taking it to the hole, and
forcing the C's to take lousy shots. If not for all those Detroit
turnovers,
this game would have been fugly.

2. I mentioned in my article the other day that Cliff Robinson would "pick
up
some scoring slack". Yikes. If he continues to shoot like that, we're in
trouble. I expect that kind of production out of Stackhouse.

3. Walker completely sucked, he had one of those games which tells me he
isn't our go-to guy (and though he says Pierce is, I wonder if he really
thinks that). Man, either he's in a zone with threes or its nothing.

If the Celtics are going to win Game 2, they need to do the following:

1. They need to create better shots if Detroit is going to maintain this
level of defense. Kenny Anderson needs to step up here and get the ball to
open shooters better. Guys need to run better without the ball. One point
the NBC commentators made was that "treys go down easier at home versus on
the
road", and I believe that. Pierce will never have such an insane game in
Detroit like he had Friday night.

2. Someone needs to get up into Robinson's face and play better defense.
I
think he's shown that he ought not to be left alone.

3. The Celtics need to relax and make their close range shots. I think
the
team was real tight. They got a lot of offensive bounds, but many of them
were off missed easy shots that should have been made.

I look for a better Celtic team Wednesday night. Detroit was up 20 and
nearly
gagged away the game. If the Celtics play more comfortably and do all that
I
said, they have a great chance to steal Game 2.

This is not a great Piston team, and we can beat them.

The thing that bothers me most is KA's been in the League for years now and
in some big games, and he pulls one like this. He has had many like this.
The whole team stunk it up from late 2nd 1/4 on. I'll be happy with a
playoff appearance and win to the 2nd level. Anything else is a bonus.
