Ray,
Which one of these two of the 20 greatest players was better, Hondo or
McHale?

Above is the original question: who was "better?" Better at what?
As you explain in your below: the distinction comes down to which
player you would pick for your team.
For me, in retrospect; Havlicek is "The Man."
Since we are using hindsight, "Hondo" played for so many more years
than Kevin, which fact pretty much negates, even the fruitless comparing
of stats., or whatever criteria, one, say a GM, would use to pick from
the two, if their names were on the draft board and it was time to make
the pick.
Below, is the response from Ray and another from Norine, which led
up to your response, at the bottom.
As for your charge that Ray: aka, Kai Brunner, aka, Howie Carr Fan,
is a "flamer," or "not a Celtics fan," I just don't see it that way.
Far be it from me to want to see posts about anyone's personality, in
that, making the poster the subject of the message, but having been
around, almost as long as you, it seems fair to post a rebuttal, to your
view. As to whether or not he's an "affectionato," I'm not going
there. I'll leave that one to Hardoo, or Bird, the relevant board's
grammarians/double-entendre specialists
Even if his posts are sarcastic, or more negative than the
prevailing wisdom, so what? Where is the flaming? I always enjoy his
intellect and humor, as well as his passion for and his knowledge, of
the team and sport. By the way, if I were comparing Celtic players,
of that Hall of Fame caliber, I'd not look at your match ups, or Ray's
either. Why not compare McHale/Heinsohn and Pierce/ Havlicek? Here we
have players, at the same positions, who were/are asked by their teams
to do similar things.
None but the old timers here will agree with me, but Heinsohn was
as effective and maybe more important, to those Celtics championship
teams, as a scorer, as McHale and rebounded and defended equally as
well. For the icing on the cake, no one had to taunt Tommy to be
aggressive.
He was the prototype, future, power forward, who scored inside and
out, banged for rebounds and was adept at the outlet pass, to start the
break.
While McHale/Heinsohn is one for the campfires, for many years to
come, I think we can see that if Pierce stays healthy and continues to
understand the "winning is everything," he will someday be compared to
Havlicek in glowing terms, but for now; "Jarrin" John, can be captain of
this fans' Celtic ship.
He never had the athleticism, he ran like Bird, after the achilles
injury, he couldn't jump three feet off the floor, but if I needed a
basket, or a defensive stop, John Havlicek would be the man I'd call.
Still:
Bird
Russell
Heinsohn
Cousy
Havlicek
Give me the above five and I'll bet on them against the whole rest
of the league's all time team. Jordan, Magic, Wilt, Karl, Dr. J..
Whoever, bring em on, just as long as I've got Dave Cowens, Tom Sanders
and Sam Jones on the bench.

I'll take Hondo over Antoine Walker any day of the week.
And McHale? Definitely better than Pierce. Thanks for asking.

That wasn't the question, Ray. As to Hondo & McHale, I don't think you
can
compare them. Different times, different strengths and both extremely
valuable to the team at their times. Why would we even want to compare
them?
Must be summer and the off season.
