By Chris Monter
Date: May 20, 2002

NBA scouts and basketball fans know all about point
guards Jay Williams of Duke, Frank Williams from Illinois
and Gonzaga's Dan Dickau is a known quantity as the
Bulldogs have been a Cinderella story the past two years.
However, there are still several sleepers at the point
guard spot. J.R. Bremer of St. Bonaventure finished
fourth in NCAA Division I and led the Atlantic 10 in
scoring at 24.6 points per game. He was named seventh
team College Basketball News' All-American.

Bremer missed the Portsmouth Invitational, due to a
hernia, but he has been working hard on his game in his
hometown of Euclid, Ohio preparing for the pre-draft camp
in Chicago and individual workouts with NBA teams. He was
a 35 inch vertical and can bench press 350 pounds, making
him the strongest point guard in this draft. Bremer is an
excellent defender.

Bremer, whose first name is Ernest, has the date 4-5-97
tattooed on his left bicep. That was the day, his father,
Ernest Sr., was shot and killed, a victim of a
carjacking. The tragedy happened just two weeks after
Bremer led Cleveland Heights to a Ohio state title as a
junior.

He scored 20 points or more in 24 of the Bonnies' 30
games, leading St. Bonaventure to a 17-13 record and a
National Invitation Tournament berth, where they lost ot
Syracuse in the first round, despite 29 points from
Bremer. Bremer's 738 points this year is the fourth best
single season total in school history and he finished his
career ninth in all-time scoring with 1,732 points. He
had seven games of 30 or more points, including 35 points
against Rhode Island and 33 points in an 18-point win at
Connecticut.

The 6-2, 185 pound Bremer set school records with 88
three-point field goals and 188 free throws. He is the
school record holder in career three-pointers with 223
and ranks in the top 10 in both assists (334) and steals
(185). Bremer averaged 4.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.9
steals per game.

Bremer was named first team All-NABC District 1 and was
chosen to the Basketball Times All-East squad. He was
named Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference and finished
runner-up to Xavier's David West for Atlantic 10 Player
of the Year. Bremer won the Chris Daniels Award for the
Atlantic-10's Most Improved Player.
