RE: [Celtics' Stuff NESN.com Celtics Preview - O'Brien's Celtics eye postseason

< The Celtics were a young team before the draft, and it was thought
that the last thing this team needed was more youth. They'll certainly
miss the veteran presence of Bryant Stith, but a team can only carry
so many swingmen on one roster. Departed for the Cavs, Stith will
provide the opposition when the C's kick off their season at the Gund
Arena Tuesday. But the Celtics team that takes the floor in the season
opener is one of the most athletic squads that Boston has ever
fielded.>

I've been thinking about the idea of adding three 20 year olds to an already
young core of Walker and Pierce. On face value, it seems a terrible idea.
However, I think, in this case, adding basketball intelligent AND talented
youngsters, like JJ and Forte, may have been the next best thing to adding a
no nonsense veteran like Charles Oakley. Walker and, to a lesser extent,
Pierce are being forced to become more responsible and thoughtful
men/basketball players so as to not look foolish and immature to these
youngsters that can play the game. For a guy like Walker, I suspect it is
easy enough to justify being immature while young and much more talented
than the veterans around him, but it is not so easy to justify being much
less mature than two or three talents five years younger than him. A quirky
'what the hell are you doing/thinking?' stare from the smart and talented
younger players like JJ and Forte will probably do more for the maturity of
Antoine and Paul than any coach could ever do.
