Raptors/Knicks - WHY???????

Knicks re-acquire G Mark Jackson from Raptors

SportsTicker

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks looked to a familiar face to shore
up their problems at point guard, re-acquiring Mark Jackson from the Toronto
Raptors
on Thursday.

The Knicks landed Jackson and fellow point guard Muggsy Bogues for point
guard Chris Childs and a 2001 first-round pick.  The pick is the one acquired
from Seattle in the deal involving Patrick Ewing.

Spurned in their pursuit of Atlanta Hawks center Dikembe Mutombo -- who
landed with the rival Philadelphia 76ers -- the Knicks tried to address what
they believe is their other problem area.

Jackson, 35, began his career with the Knicks, winning the NBA Rookie of the
Year award in 1988.  He spent five seasons in his hometown before being
traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in 1991.

Considered one of the smartest players in the game, the 6-3 Jackson also has
played for Denver and Indiana.  He left the Pacers after last season to sign
a four-year, $16 million deal with the Raptors.

Jackson recently moved past Isiah Thomas into fourth place on the all-time
assists list.  He is averaging 8.5 points and 9.2 assists in 54 games this
season, his 13th in the NBA.

Bogues, also a 13-year veteran, is on the injured list after undergoing knee
surgery earlier this month.  The shortest player in NBA history at 5-3,
Bogues does not figure to play much as any minutes not taken by Jackson
figure to go to Charlie Ward.

Childs, 33, is in his sixth season.  He was averaging 4.8 points and a
team-high 4.6 assists for the Knicks, who signed him to a six-year, $24
million contract in 1996 and have been looking to trade him over the past
several years.

Childs figures to share point guard duties with Alvin Williams with the
Raptors, who are jockeying for playoff position but nevertheless traded their
most savvy player.

The Knicks also placed center Travis Knight on the injured list with a
sprained left ankle.
