Pitino always handled defense with no specialist coach.  But he's
as talented as most specialist assistants anyway. If we had a rookie
Tim Duncan or traded for a vet Olajuwan/Mutumbo (instead of Travis
and Vitaly getting big minutes during his years), his defensive system
would have worked IMO.

Yes, Obie must have planned how the team would play D and O, when
he drafted the 3 shooting guards.  The better stats on D don't seem
to be because of the new players.  Looks more like the new system, plus
the four frontcourt boys(Battie,V,Paul,Antoine) are growing up(physically
tougher and more mature attitudes), and have been together.  Check out
where the C's rank in rebounding, and watch games to see how they hit the
defensive glass and cover for people nowadays.
