I'm not sure, but I think the "maximum" contract is based on annual raises to the player's existing salary. Pierce, drafted a few spots below Carter, is making less than Vince on their rookie contracts, so his annual raises-say 10 percent or whatever-are slightly less in the new deal. Mark
