Celtics waive one, place three on IR

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Celtics waived forward John ''Hot Rod'' Williams and 
placed three players on injured reserve Monday to reach the opening day 
12-man roster limit. 

Williams, acquired from the Dallas Mavericks in a four-team trade in August, 
is recovering from a back injury and did not play in the preseason. 

The Celtics placed Greg Minor (hip), Chris Herren (ankle sprain) and Walter 
McCarty (tendinitis) on the injured list. 

Minor has not played since fracturing his right hip during the 1998-99 
season. Herren, acquired in an October 16 trade with Denver, sprained his 
left ankle in a preseason game, and McCarty has tendinitis in a his right 
knee. 

The Celtics open the regular season Wednesday at home against the Detroit 
Pistons.
