Peter May Says Chauncey

Peter May's mock draft

This NBA draft is unlike any other in recent years because two teams,
the Bulls and Magic, control five of the first 13 picks. In addition,
both are desperately trying to clear as much cap space as possible for
the summer free agent rush.

The consensus No. 1 pick, Kenyon Martin, is recuperating from a broken
leg, and there are questions about his health; he may need more surgery.
There are three top centers, two of whom no one really wants and a third
who played in Greece last year.

The best players are power forwards. Five of the first 13 could all be
so-called "4 men." There also is the annual fascination with the
athletic, can't-miss high school player and, yes, the Clippers, in a
position where they could screw it up for themselves and everyone else.

There will be sliders and risers, and the pecking order was thrown for a
minor loop yesterday with the three-way trade involving Cleveland,
Golden State, and Milwaukee.

At any rate, the class of 2000:

No. Team Player Pos. School Comment
1 New Jersey Kenyon Martin PF Cincinnati Best player in the draft to a
team that needs more than one.
2 Vancouver Stromile Swift PF LSU Up-and-comer who may be even better
than Martin down the road.
3 LA Clippers Darius Miles SF East St. Louis HS This may be a pick for a
trade (to Orlando), or it just may be the Clippers being the Clippers.
4 Chicago Chris Mihm C Texas Following in the long Chicago tradition of
Tom Boerwinkle, Will Perdue, and Luc Longley.
5 Orlando Marcus Fizer PF Iowa State This could be a pick for the
Clippers, but it's a good pick regardless.
6 Atlanta Mike Miller SF Florida He's the one they wanted all along.
7 Chicago DerMarr Johnson SG Cincinnati He may slide, but he's also a
versatile, Pippenesque 2-guard.
8 Cleveland Joel Przybilla C Minnesota Can anyone figure out why they
got Tractor Traylor when they already have Shawn Kemp? They need a
center because the one they have may never play again and the other one
is Andrew DeClercq.
9 Houston Jerome Moiso PF UCLA The Rockets also like Etan Thomas at this
position, but Moiso is getting jazzier by the day.
10 Orlando Courtney Alexander SG Fresno State Dynamic scorer with a
checkered past. If he goes to the Clippers, no one will know or care.
11 Boston Keyon Dooling PG Missouri They like him as someone who can
play both backcourt positions. They said the same thing about Chauncey
Billups. Quentin Richardson and DeShawn Stevenson also figure in here.
