More GM deep thoughts
Ok. The Oregonian has O'Neil asking for a trade and lists the Bulls and
Celtics as candidates with the Celtics including Battie with thier no. 1. It
also mentions O'Neil as a base comp player. If traded before July 1, Portland
can not take back more than .5 * ( 5 million) = 2. 5 million. This is what
Battie makes. However, the Celts can't give up 2. 5 million and take back 5
million since they are over the cap. This doesn't seem to work. If the trade
is done after July 1, the Blazers can take back no more than .75 * (5.5
million) = 4.1 million. This won't work either because Tony is going to be
making 5 million or so. I thinking maybe the player is Fortson instead of
Battie. You could get Fortson to agree to whatever salary necessary to make
the trade go down. However, the trade will never work because both teams are
over the cap and can only take back less than what they are trading away in
salary. Am I missing something here?...
